Walter as a young man ran away to sea at age 14 and became a cabin bo y. He went to South Africa (Johannesburg) . He eventually opened up a hard ware store "The Wooburn Moor Supply Stores" in Africa with a partner Sam S penser. The store sold : Provisions,Tobacco,Sweets,Haberdashery,Hardware,C hina,Crockery, etc.
Walter's son Robert's middle name came from Spenser the friend. Walter cau ght Malaria and had to return to England. As he was making the funeral arr angements for his father James's passing, he saw a young girl swingi ng on a gate in Monks Risborough . He married this young Jessie Blackwel l. They lived in Putney, then came WW I and Walter joined the King's Roy al Rifles. After the war his malaria caused him to lose many jobs. At o ne point he tried to immigrate to Canada but the Malaria flared up aga in as the ship entered Halifax and he ironically (as his daughter Olive se ttled in Canada years later) was sent back to England. He kept moving arou nd , losing jobs and eventually lived at 42 Austin Waye, Uxbridge. He di ed in Hillingdon Hospital.

Walter was a kind but strong man. He was very proud and had a very "Victor ian" ethic; girls home early, good education, no-one speaks till spoken t o, boys called him "Sir", strong religious upbringing.
