      He served in the military in the Civil War, about 1862. He served with Co mpany E, 13th MI infantry military guarding the Canadian frontier in M I. John came to the region after the close to the war and settled on a fa rm at the head of Torch Lake where he lived and prospered for thirteen yea rs. He lived most of his life in Torch Lake Village where he drove sta ge carrying mail.
