      He served in the military in Civil War, Feb 1864-Jun 1865. Cushman work ed as a businessman from 1888 and built up a large mercantile busine ss in Ashtabula County. He served in the 2nd Ohio Volunteers Calvary in F eb 1864, taken prisoner at Reams Station on June 24,1864 and was confin ed for 2 months in Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. He was paroled a nd exchanged and mustered out of the service in June 1865.
