He lived in Ohio, and was murdered, in the spring of 1838, in Westchest er township, Porter, OH by F. Stares.
From a printed account of the murder and trial the following is condensed:
Mr. Pelton had hired a sawmill near Arba Heald's, in La Porte, IN, and wi th Stares worked it. They had abandoned the mill and were on the way to P orter. While passing on horseback along an Indian trail, Mr. Pelton in t he lead, Stares shot him in the back. After his fall from his horse, Star es again shot him and then beat him to death with a club. In cutting t he club Stares broke a piece out of his knife blade; this piece was fou nd and fitted into the blade of a knife found on him. Stares threw the bo dy into a dark stream and covered it with pieces of wood. But it was fou nd by Ge-geem-o-co-wah, an Indian, who reported to his chief, and he th en to the whites. Stares was arrested that night in Michigan City; was tr ied and convicted of murder in the first degree and hung, the first and on ly execution in Porter Co, up to 1879. After the death of her husband, Mr s. Pelton returned to near Cincinnati, OH, probably to her former home, wh ence, it is said, she went to Canada. Her fate is unknown.
