Barbara trained as a school teacher and was a devout member of the Bapti st Church and proud of her family history. She taught at the Pierowall Sch ool and succeeded the farm at Chalmersquoy and lived their until her dea th at the Kirkwall County Home. She willed that the farm and her goo ds be sold and distributed to her nieces and nephews in America and Jamaic a.

Tammy Irvi n, (602-935-1645) grandaughter of Kay attended and the executor was Mi mi Thomas( 619-574-6825) personal friend of Herbert. Estranged childr en of the first marriage did not attend due to distance and timing howev er calls were made by Mary to Tammy and Mimi. Mary wished to go but cou ld not afford to. Herbert ashes were cast through San Diego Zoo Park.

Jean Hewison is reported to be a descendent of a shipwrecked Spanish sail or off the ship "El Gran Grifon" circa 1588. Malcolm Sinclair father of t he wife of Michael Balfour of Garth entertained these same shipwrecked sai lors.

Jessie was the loving grand mother, particularly to Roger. She was an amaz ing person and had to raise all the children following Walters death. S he worked as a cleaning woman. Sister in law Grace had a lot of say abo ut the welfare and schooling of the children.

Walter as a young man ran away to sea at age 14 and became a cabin bo y. He went to South Africa (Johannesburg) . He eventually opened up a hard ware store "The Wooburn Moor Supply Stores" in Africa with a partner Sam S penser. The store sold : Provisions,Tobacco,Sweets,Haberdashery,Hardware,C hina,Crockery,etc.
Walter's son Robert's middle name came from Spenser the friend. Walter cau ght Malaria and had to return to England. As he was making the funeral arr angements for his father James's passing, he saw a young girl swingi ng on a gate in Monks Risborough . He married this young Jessie Blackwel l. They lived in Putney, then came WW I and Walter joined the King's Roy al Rifles. After the war his malaria caused him to lose many jobs. At o ne point he tried to immigrate to Canada but the Malaria flared up aga in as the ship entered Halifax and he ironically (as his daughter Olive se ttled in Canada years later) was sent back to England. He kept moving arou nd , losing jobs and eventually lived at 42 Austin Waye, Uxbridge. He di ed in Hillingdon Hospital.

Walter was a kind but strong man. He was very proud and had a very "Victor ian" ethic; girls home early, good education, no-one speaks till spoken t o, boys called him "Sir", strong religious upbringing.
