1776 In 1861 he enlisted in Co. E, 8th Regiment, Michigan
Volunteers Infantry, and was assigned to the 2d
Brigade, 1st Division of the 9th Corps, under Gen.
W. T. Sherman, Gen. Stevens Brigade Commander.
Landed in South Carolina November 8, 1861; remained
there until the summer of 1862, when in
storming a breastwork on James Island, S.C., June
16, he was severely wounded in the wrist. After
lying a week in the brigade hospital he was sent to
the city hospital in New York city, where he stayed
four months, and was then honorably discharged for
physical disability, October 20, 1862.
