In 18 41 he assumed editorial charge of the American National Preacher, a Philad elphia journal, and while engaged in this work also became editor and prop rietor of the New York Evangelist, the Eclectic Magazine and the Americ an Biblical Repositor. For a short time he had charge of the American Theo logical Review. In 1867 he received from Secretary Seward the appointme nt of special US commissioner to western Asia, and he spent several mont hs in travelling through that part of the old world.
