Their first two or three years there were ye ars of privation and unremitting toil, it being difficult at first to g et food enough for the family. During the first fall of their pioneer lif e, while the men were clearing the land, the women of the family gather ed one hundred fifty bushels of hickory nuts, which brought fifty cents p er bushel. They had to go thirty miles to mill and seven to the nearest p lace for trade. At Litchfield Center there was but one little log hous e, used also for a post office. Their first fourth of July in OH was cele brated by the assembling of the inhabitants of Litchfield early in the mor ning and their building a meeting house in the style of those days, it be ing also used a school house.
