She was a small, dainty, home-loving person; her favorite flower was the v iolet. She was born within days of her parents' arrival in Canada in 185 5. She married at the age of 18, she turned 20 twelve days after the bir th of her first child. She was particular about the names she chose for t here children, wishing to provide them with names which could not easi ly be shortened or nicknamed. For her first born she selected " Lionel Vi ncent" but when her husband registered the birth, he wrote "Lionel Jame s" as he thought that "L.J." made a more distinctive set of initials. F ro her second sone she chose "Herbert Vincent" but when Herbert got his bi rth certificate, he was registered as "Hubert" - probably because of po or writing on the registration form.
