Phil Houbler presents "It Happened Here" by Fred Hayes: "The Public Squa re in Mount Vernon, OH was the scene of the most humorous recollection inv olving a bobsled. A Pelton-piloted bob collided with a street car, knocki ng the car off the tracks! No damage was done, other than to the feelin gs of the motorman and conductor. Fifty volunteers managed to get the str eet car back on the tracks. Taking a dim view of the whole thing were a c ouple stern minions of the law - City Policeman Bill Huff and Bob McElr oy - who cited the entire sled crew for disturbing the peace, reckless ope ration or something of the kind. The Cadillac of Mount Vernon bobs was t he Jay Pelton owned outfit, with a carrying capacity of 22 passengers. Ja y, a bulky baseball catcher with Larry Mahaffey's Mount Vernon Reds, as we ll as various other local clubs, was always up front at the controls of h is "monster". A lengthy run, but not one particularly fast, was a tranqu il trip, which had its point of departure at the standpipe on Mansfield Av enue."
