Notes:

From 1787 to 1811 he followed the sea as cabin boy, sailor, captain and owner, trading principally with the West Indies and the
Spanish Main, both in North and South America;
also with Brazil and the Guianas. In l811, during
the Mexican insurrection, under Hidalgo, he was
captured while commanding a vessel owned by himself and his brother, Moses, the vessel and $30,000 in specie confiscated and he held a captive. * Released, after three years, he found his vessel sold and all his papers destroyed, which prevented the recovery of his property. Abandoning the sea, he, in June 1815, gathered up his family, and with a wagon drawn by an ox team for a conveyance, started for Ohio, and in August following arrived at Euclid, near Cleveland, OH., where a cousin, Jonathan Pelton, son of Joseph Pelton, 1st, of Chatham, Conn., had settled the year before. Here he bought land, and here his
wife Lucy (b. Aug. 1 [or 11], 1775) died September
2, 1815. In 1819 he bought land with a small clearing and a log house, of John Sherrarts, in Vermillion, Huron (now Erie) Co., OH., and removed to the new farm. At that time there was large game, deer, bears, wolves and wild turkeys in plenty, with some Indians still roaming the woods. Here he was a farmer. But he could not forget the old vocation, and soon after his arrival built a small vessel, launched her upon Lake Erie, and called her the "Franklin" after his youngest son. At that time the
nearest mills were at Cleveland and Cold Creek.

* Another account says he was taken and held captive by pirates.

She moved March 1854. She moved again January 1864. She resided in Vermi llion, Erie, OH in 1878. Anna, along with her husband and her eldest s on when he was a month old, started with a company for Oregon, going the o verland route with teams and wagons. They met many hard and bitter experi ences on their perilous journey, but overcame them all, arrived and settl ed in Olympia, WA. While in the west her husband met with a violent deat h. They had but moved from Olympia to Port Angeles, a small town of but f ew inhabitants, and were there only ten days when by a rush of water fr om the mountains carrying everything before it, he who had left his litt le family but one half hour before was killed. He was found the next d ay and brought back to his wife a lifeless corpse. She, with small childr en, was left among strangers to fight life's battles alone, In 1864 she r eturned to Ohio by water, to resided with her father and mother, where s he proved a most faithful and dutiful daughter, remaining with them to t he end. It was her portion to care through long sicknesses unto death, h er father, mother, grandmother and eldest brother. All which she did chee rfully and without a murmur. Her obituary says, "Although of quiet and re served nature her live has been an eventful one."

He was a Farmer. He applied for homestead land in Ford County, KS in Dece mber of 1885. He resided in Ford, ford, KS in 1888. Family members ho ld an annual Pelton Reunion in dodge City, Kansas since 1949. The fami ly moved to Ford County with Austin and Carolyn when Mary was 2 months old .
In the late fall of 1885 Charles and Emma, with his parents, Austin and Ca roline, left Lorain, OH and came to KS. Jewell Pelton remembers hearing t hey came by rail along with others also moving from OH. Everyone's catt le and livestock were shipped in one car and were sorted after their arriv al at Harper in central KS. Charles brought his two horses, Baldie his fa vorite and another. Mary Pelton Day always said she came to Ford Count y, KS by covered wagon and probably did come that way from Harper, KS. Th ey arrived in Ford County the 9th of November 1885. Charles and Emma at th at time had two small daughters, Elotta and Mary who was only 2 and a ha lf months old. Charles and his father homesteded land about 6 mile ND of t he small town of Ford, KS. The government granted to each man a quarter s ection of land at $1.25 per acre, and they were to live on it six months a nd prove it up. On December 31, 1890 Charles and Emma received from t he US government a patent for proving up a claim on the SE 1/4 of 13-27-2 2. The present register of deeds said it took 5 years to fully pro ve up a homestead and receive a patent. In November of 1891 Charles and E mma purchased a large piece of land just north of Ford which became the ho me place. About 1895 a large two-story house was built and carbide ligh ts were installed -- a modern thing in those days. Mulberry Creek ran th ru the farm and provided ample fish and game. Charles planted a large orc hard so there was fruit available. About 8 years before his death Charl es began to suffer with the crippling kind of rheumatoid arthritis. His l ast three years he was confined to bed and suffered greatly.
