J. M. Pelton states on pages 34-37 of The Pelton Book,
"Our knowledge of his life is unfortunately, very meager. It is, howeve r, known from the land records of Suffolk County, Boston, Suffolk Count y, Mass., that he lived for some time on Long Island, NY, then called Nass au, where he and his wife, Sarah, signed a deed of certain parcels of la nd in Suffolk, County, Mass, May 24, 1714. Nothing is known of the pla ce or time of his death, which last was probably at middle age. It is sa id that he lived in or near Huntington, L.I., which is probable, his young est
brother, Benjamin, having bought a house and land there, in 1723.
The maiden name of his wife, tradition says, was Whiting, which is also pr obable, as
relatives of that name, it is known, visited her descendants in Connecticu t.
Diligent search among the defective town records of Long Island has brough t
no knowledge on these points or as to the death of his wife Sarah. As Samu el
was probably married by 1700, or soon after, it is more than probable he h ad
several children before the birth of Robert. This opinion is confirm ed by 'An
account of money laid out for provisions for my Aunt Mary Pelton,' running
for some length of time, and found on the last page of an account bo ok of his
grandson, Samuel, now in possession of William H. Pelton, of Warwick, N.Y.
now 1892, living in Passaic, NJ. Robert's son, Samuel Pelton with son
Richard, and probably his two daughters, Hannah and Rebecca, as well as hi s
father, Robert, and brother Richard, and, perhaps, a sister or two of Robe rt,
lie buried in the 'Pelton burying-ground,' on the homestead in Darien now
owned by John V. Hecker, of New York city and Darien. It contains a costly
family vault built by Mr. John T. Hecker, deceased. From an account-book o f
Samuel Pelton, owned by his grandson, Henry Pelton, now 1892, of Passai c, NJ
and from the cover of a 'Sum-book,' used by his grandson, Henry Pelton, no w
owned by Samuel Pelton, of Warwick, Orange County, NY, many of these name s, facts and dates have been obtained. Not a person bearing the name of Pe lton now lives in Darien, Conn., neither a person of the name who was bo rn there."

He bought and sold much land as recorded in the "History of Windham Co. Co nn." In order to repossess lands claimed by Captain Jonathan Belche r, he met at the house with the sheriff and others. On their arrival, Jab ez Utter being absent (his wife and their children being in possession)- J ohn Pelton, John Chandler and Edward Morris placed poles against the hous e, up which they climbed to the roof and then down through the chimney, a nd opened the door. He owned land in Saybrook and Middletown; -- di ed in 1735. He died in the midst of a very active life and in mature vig or of his mental powers. He was a carpenter/joiner.

I, John Pelton of Middletown, do make this my last will and testament:
I give to my wife Jemima all my household goods, to be her estate foreve r. I also give to her the use of 1/2 of my house in Middletown, and the u se of 1/3 part of my 400 acre farm called the School lott, during the ti me she continues my relict and widow.
I give to my eldest son, John, besides what I have advanced towards his se ttlement, my ?50 in Potopogue Quarter in Saybrook, together with the divis ions and allotments of land that have been laid out thereupon and have n ot been to me conveyed, and also that shall hereafter be laid out upon s d. right or belonging thereto.
To my son James (besides what I have already given him) I give him 5 shill ings. And upon condition tht my son James shall discharge my executors fr om all claims and demands which he may pretend to have against my estat e, and as he ought to do, shall resign up his claims and interests in t ow yoke of my oxen (which I heretofore mortgaged to him) unto my executo rs that the sd. oxen may by them be disposed of as in this my will I sha ll order then my will is that he shall have ?40 paid to him, as I shall he reafter direct, within four years after my decease.
To my two sons, Phineas and Johnson, I give the 1/2 of my avovesd. 400 acr es called the School lott, together with 1/2 of my dwelling house there on standing, to them, their heirs and assigns forever, on condition that t hey pay out such legacies as I shall hereafter order.

Henry was a Farmer and a Merchant. According to the Bristol, MA (now R I) Town Record, Henry was born 10 Dec 1690 on the "Mount Hope Farm". He re moved to Groton, CT, where he married, Mary Rose, and where he lived, a nd there died, in 1763, day and month unknown, His occupation is not cert ainly known, but tradition says he was a Merchant. However this may ha ve been he certainly was a farmer, owning considerable land down to 176 0, and was an active business man through life, and much respected in t he community in which he lived. The Lan Records of Groton show twelve con veyances of land to him and six from him, his first purchase having been f rom his brother John, who is given in the record as then a resident of Gro ton. His last purchase was from his son Paul, April 14, 1746. His fir st conveyance was to his son Paul, 14 Feb 1745. "For Love and Good Wi ll to his son"; others to his sons Reuben and Thomas; again to his son Pau l, "The farm he now lives on, "15 July 1760, and finally, his last to Heze kiah Stoddard, 10 acres, 27 June 1763, In 1760 and 1761 he seems to ha ve settled his estate, in a way then quite common, by disposing of his lan ds and by making an arrangement with his son Paul to support himself and h is wife Mary during their lives. That his judgment was respected is prov en by the fact recorded in the "Conn. Phineas served in the Militia under General Gates in 1777. He suffered fr om "numb Palsey" for 23 years before his death. Phineas and his brothe r, Johnson, inherited from their father, John Pelton (1682), 400 acres cal led school lot and one half the dwelling house thereon. The old homeste ad of John Pelton the 1st, of Saybrook, lies in what is now the Twp of Por tland.

He was a Cabinetmaker. He resided in Hempstead, Long Island, NY before 17 58. He moved to New York City in 1758.
He exported to the West Indies. About 1772 he sailed for that destinati on with products of his shop, but, as alleged by the captain of the vesse l, was swept over board and lost. His family were of the opinion th at he was thrown overboard. His property on board was not recovered, alth ough two sons, Benjamin and Daniel, were sent to look after it, returnin g, after an absence of two years, having, in the meantime, been shipwreck ed and carred to Spain. they two, and a negro only, were saved upon a des ert island, where they stayed till taken off by a passing vessel. It w as afterward learned from the crew that the captain refused to change h is course to save Mr. Pelton, but that he carried his vessel into West Ind ai port, sold the cargo and changed his crew; thence sailed to South Ameri ca and sold his ship. "Philip's cause of death may have been murder at sea ."

He was a Farmer and a Ship smith. Of light complexion and hair, broad sho ulders with short neck and legs and of great strength. Once he shoulder m oved an anchor to show he was as strong as an ox and the pressure split h is cowhide shoes.
"Nathan was a sturdy scion from a sturdy puritan stock, both in mind a nd in body, and was honored in Church and in State. He ruled his house s ternly, as the following anecdotes, told by his great-granddaughter, Mr s. Emily P. Miller, whose father and mother were both grandchildren of Nat han, will shoe: "one evening his children, or grandchildren, had for visit ors their cousins Phelps, and making more noise in their fun than the o ld gentleman thought proper, he left his bed and severely reprimanded the m. On another occasion a dance being in progress in the neighborhoo d, he suspected that a son and daughter had gone there. He went ot see a nd finding them took them home for the night, or so he thought. They havi ng inherited a fair share of their father's spirit, after all was quiet re turned to the dance and saw it out." he attended church with utmost regula rity, regardless of wind or weather, and from Saturday night to Sunday nig ht, the New England Sabbath, scarcely allowed a word above a whisper in h is house. he was not a favorite with the young, but was always a thouroug hly reliable man. His light complexion with light hair and stocky statu re where characteristics of the early New England Peltons.
At the beginning of the campaign of 1759, of the "Old French War" Nathan a nd his brother Ithamar were members of Captain Peleg Redfield's Company. ( 1st Lt. George Nettleton; 2d Abraham Pyler; Ensign, Edward Shipman), who j oined the forces of General Amherst, and served through the campaign, In 1 760, Captain Redfield again served with his company.
The family Bible of Nathan was in the possession of hes grandson, Enoch Pe lton of South Windsor, CT in 1892. it is said that in early live, Natha n, in Middletown, CT, was connected in business with John Harper, a m an of Scotch-Irish descent, who had married Miriam Thompson, daughter of J ames Thompson of Windsor, CT, another Scotchman, That Miriam's sister Rut h, while visiting her, met Mr. Pelton who afterward married her. The y, in time, removed to Windsor, where they became permanent residents, whi le John Harper went to New York State, bought 250 acres of land and found ed Harpersfield in Delaware county. He was an associate of Sir William Jo hnson and Jos. Brant. In the Revolutionary War, Colonel John Harper, comm anding at Fort Schoharie, was warned by Brant of coming danger in ti me to save the lives of himself and family, even though his house was burn ed and the village destroyed. Story, as related in the Trumbull and Mahoning counties History: "The fir st wedding in the township occurred about 1802 under rather singular circu mstances. According to Trumbull and Mahoning Counties, OH, History, Hen ry Stroes, in August, 1800, became sole owner of the Gustavus townshi p. He transferred, in 1802. to Josiah Pelton five thousand on hundred a nd ninety-eight and one-fourth acres for $6,382.25. This was the first de ed executed by Stores after he became sole owner of the township.
"Sons Elias and Jesse went to Ohio late spring of 1800, built a log hou se and stayed until fall. Eials returned to Vermont and Jesse stayed in O hio. the first white man to do so. In March 1801, Elias, his wife and in fant daughter Zilpha, left Vermont for Ohio going down the Connecticut riv er to New Haven, CT, then by vessel to New York then to Philadelphia. Fr om there they took a six horse wagon to Pittsburgh, a boat down the Oh io to Veaver and up the Beaver river to Sharon, Pennsylvania. From the re they took ox teams to Gustavus, Ohio, arriving in May. The trip took s ix weeks from Vermont and they were the first white family. In 1802, fath er Josiah and family removed to Gustavus being the second white famil y. In the autumn Jesse, Third son of Josiah married to become the third f amily."

From 1787 to 1811 he followed the sea as cabin boy, sailor, captain and owner, trading principally with the West Indies and the
Spanish Main, both in North and South America;
also with Brazil and the Guianas. In l811, during
the Mexican insurrection, under Hidalgo, he was
captured while commanding a vessel owned by himself and his brother, Moses, the vessel and $30,000 in specie confiscated and he held a captive. * Released, after three years, he found his vessel sold and all his papers destroyed, which prevented the recovery of his property. Abandoning the sea, he, in June 1815, gathered up his family, and with a wagon drawn by an ox team for a conveyance, started for Ohio, and in August following arrived at Euclid, near Cleveland, OH., where a cousin, Jonathan Pelton, son of Joseph Pelton, 1st, of Chatham, Conn., had settled the year before. Here he bought land, and here his
wife Lucy (b. Aug. 1 [or 11], 1775) died September
2, 1815. In 1819 he bought land with a small clearing and a log house, of John Sherrarts, in Vermillion, Huron (now Erie) Co., OH., and removed to the new farm. At that time there was large game, deer, bears, wolves and wild turkeys in plenty, with some Indians still roaming the woods. Here he was a farmer. But he could not forget the old vocation, and soon after his arrival built a small vessel, launched her upon Lake Erie, and called her the "Franklin" after his youngest son. At that time the
nearest mills were at Cleveland and Cold Creek.

* Another account says he was taken and held captive by pirates.

He was listed as the head of a family on the 1790 Census in Wallkill, Ulst er, NY. The homestead of Peleg Sr. was bought in what was then the townsh ip of Calhoun, afterward named Mount Hope. He bought 150 acres of unbrok en timber land of Eleazar Lord in 1786 for ten shillings per acre, intendi ng to make some improvments, and then sell out and go to the "lake countr y" of central New York.
