He worked in a ti le factory, then tiling farms, mail stage coach driver and as custodi an of the state storage barn in Rock Falls. He was born in what is known as the Jackson house, in New Bedford, on Mar ch 6,1857, son of Charles P. and Amelia Reynolds Pelton, who came to New B edford from Brickville, 15 mile south of Cleveland, OH in a prairie schoon er in 1849. Mr. Pelton says his father used to tell of the work of hor se thieves who stole two horses, led behind the wagon in halter, while t he family was riding in the wagon. Not long afterwards the theft of the h orses was discovered, and the father and uncle unharnessed the pole hors es from the wagon and armed with their rifles, rode back until they overto ok the thieves and recovered their horses.
