Alma's daughter, Veletta, said that Alma was to have been named Lois Virgi nia, but at the last minute they decided on Alma. Alma was a commercial s eamstress and baker. She had a licensed bakery in her home and bak ed in a tent oven on a 2 burner gast stove. Alma had custom-made angel ca ke pans and she made the most beautiful wedding cakes in town. She was al so famous for her beautifully decorated Christmas cookies. Eventually h er baking talent won her an electric stove.

At age 19 he was blinded in a Colorado mine explosion. His shoulder and a rm were also damaged and he convinced the doctor not to amputate. He th en taught himself to be a car mechanic and clock repairman. He had an o ld Model T Ford he took apart and put together by feel. His auto repair s hop was a small tin shed without lights. He had a rope with a series of k nots in it to help him find whatever part he needed. As cars became more c omplicated he took to repairing clocks in the mid 1960's.

Charles was a Masons member in Cook, IL 1873. Charles Ephraim Rees, Poli ce Magistrate came to Chicago in 1846 and worked at his trade of shoe mak er for a short time. Having saved some money he purchased an outfit and f ollowed the business of teaming from about 1849 to 1852. He purchased a fa rm on Wolf Lake, within what are now the corporate limits of Hyde Par k, in 1853. The last piece of this farm he sold in 1883, for village lo ts in Ainsworth. In 1871 Mr. Rees was appointed a Justice of the Peace f or Cook County, in the town of Hyde Park, to replace James Bennett. He w as elected his own successor in 1873, but he resigned in 1874, when he bec ame the successful candidate for Police Magistrate of Hyde Park. At the c lose of his term in 1878, he turned his attention to business pursuits. B ut in April, 1882, he was again elected Police Magistrate for the full te rm ending in 1886. In 1859 Mr. Rees married Sarah Bowles, who died in 186 4, leaving two children, In 1865 he married Bridget D. Kelcher, by wh om he has had seven children. Mr. Rees has been a Mason since 1873, a nd is a Democrat in Politics.
