Notes: Hamilton Pelton, the youngest of his fathers's seven children, was rais ed by his stepfather until eighteen years of age, when he began life for h imself. When he reached his majority he obtained $50 of his brother o ut of his father's estate, and having saved $150, he put the two sums toge ther, and with them started for the State of Illinois, walking the enti re distance, 550 miles. Arriving on the Kankakee River, he gave $1 00 to a "squatter" for eighty acres of land, thirty acres being broken a nd fenced, and supplied with a log house and barn. He afterwards so ld it to the former owner at a small profit, and returning to Canada, purc hased his first farm, in Burford Township. He then bought 50 acres in Blei nheim on the Government Road, 50 near it in Burford, which he cleared, a nd lastly, he purchased his present place. He now owns 440 acres of farm l and, a foundry, and nearly an acre of land attached, at Bishopgate, a nd a lot and ashery at Kelvin. Hamilton married Hannah MARTIN. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
