    She raised her five sons alone. Worked in a mine prop and store busines s. Bob Johnson says: "Alice apparently was the daughter of an unmarried g al - last name Schoonover - who became pregnant from an Indian from arou nd the Jamestown, NY area. That is a story he was told about her life bef ore being adopted by Henry Thomas. She was reported to have been bo rn 14 Mar 1863 near or at Center Hill and died 14 Apr 1835 in Morrisdale a lthough I've also heard she died in Clearfield. On her husband's death ce rtificate her name is listed as Alice P. Pelton in addition to Alice L. Pe lton that some sources state.

    He may have moved to Lock Haven, PA with his mother and brothers, Ephra im and William after the death of his father. He was one of the Founde rs of the Center Hill Methodist Church. He had a dispute with the past or or deacons and vowed never to reenter the church. At his wife's funera l, he sat on the steps during the ceremony and then followed the processi on to the grave.
