    He was a Farmer, Shipbuilder and a Sailor. " James showed the family tra it - mechanical ability - by building his own wagon at Essex, VT even to t he casting of lead boxes for the wheels. This wagon he drove down to C T, on his return with his family. On arrival he offered himself as a ship -carpenter but was rejected for alleged want of experience. He at once bo ught a large boat, cut her in two and lengthened her. Seeing the quali ty of his work the shipbuilder, who had refused him employment, offered h im a place in his yard at good wages. This offer he refused, and riggi ng up his boat he put to sea in it, his own master."
