Jean Hewison is reported to be a descendent of a shipwrecked Spanish sail or off the ship "El Gran Grifon" circa 1588. Malcolm Sinclair father of t he wife of Michael Balfour of Garth entertained these same shipwrecked sai lors.

The Balfours of the 18th and 19th centuries were called the "Dons" owi ng to the
tradition of their Spanish blood.
