Upham's Company K, Eighth Regiment of CT Volunteer Infantry. Assign ed to General Burnside's Ninth Army Corps, they served through the North C arloina campaign until the taking of Fort Macon, NC. Then served with Gene ral Burnside in Virginia, where they joined the army of Potomac, being ma de a part of the Eighteenth Corps. At Antietam, MD 17 Sep 1862 he was seve rely wounded, taken prisoner and paroled on the field. He was exchang ed in the follwing November and was discharged 4 Mar 1863.
    Edward served in the military 9 Feb 1865-9 Feb 1868. He enlisted aga in 9 Feb 1865 in the Sixth United States Regular Calvary. August 12 he w as appointed first sergeant of Company E.
